Intellicare's Boomerang Life is an activity pack designed to make it easier for facilitators to engage seniors with dementia with social interaction and mentally stimulating activities.
The product's DVDs and flash cards worked well for the past four years, but it needs to be updated to run on modern devices, expand its reach beyond care homes, and deliver a more engaging experience for both seniors with dementia and the facilitator.
After witnessing how the product is used and the learning pain points of existing solutions, the team set out to design a mobile app for tablets.
One of the pain points identified was that the condition of dementia patients will only decline. So instead of having levels users must complete to proceed, facilitators can do any number of activities in the app with seniors in any order they want. Activities do not have to be completed to go to the next. Records track what activities were done, the senior's mood that day, and activity notes so it can be communicated with the senior's family.
To improve accessibility, we increased font sizes and contrast to accommodate those who are farsighted, split steps into multiple screens to reduce distractions, hid or shrunk elements to be used by facilitators, included buttons to move between content if something was missed, and included an autoplay feature for seniors with mobility difficulties.
